Universal Learning design is something that is so important to me while planning my lessons. My personal experience in school was challenging as I was not diagnosed with ADHD until I was an adult. This meant I got in trouble a lot with teachers as I had trouble sitting still, refraining from talking, and focusing. When a teacher provided lessons that followed a UDL model such as hands on activities, free time in between harder lessons and enough time to complete activities I was always more successful. In stage three of Wiggins book they ask, “How will we prepare them to autonomously transfer their learning?”(Wiggins & McTighe, 2011.) In my slides below I touch on the Gradual release of responsibility model. This is a technique that helps students through slowly transferring the responsibility while guiding them through the process. This follows the UDL principles as it provides all students with access to support, and allows them to work independently when they understand and feel capable of doing it alone. It also provides students who need further guidance to continue to get support until they feel ready and capable as well.

These are some ways I include the UDL principals into my lessons:

I also taught grade five this week and we used google maps in our project. We used google maps to find somewhere each kid would like to travel. They then had to use street view, and filters to find places to eat, accommodations, landmarks, and they had to share three things they learned about the place. The students did a great job and my new found knowledge and experience with google maps helped. I was able to assist students during the activity and I now have a new activity I can do with students.
